Aporkalypse Now! Twitter reacts in horror to news of bacon shortage

Ireland’s sow herds are shrinking. Let’s not do anything rash(er).

CALM DOWN EVERYBODY. Just calm down.

It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating International Bacon Day, and now the news comes that Britain’s National Pig Association has issued a warning that Europe’s pork and bacon supply is dwindling. The pig herd is ‘declining at a significant rate’.

Ireland’s sow herd numbers are down 6.6 per cent in the 12 months to June 2012, according to the NPA. High pig feed costs and the global failure of maize and soya harvests.

Buying Irish pork and bacon products is one way you can help to halt the aporkalypse, while supermarkets are being urged to pay pig farmers more for their products.

The NPA is predicting that with the number of pigs being slaughtered in Europe set to drop by as much as ten per cent next year, the price of pork products could double.
