HEY KIDS! WANNA know how to beat the bullies? Don’t tell on them.
That’s the advice a school in Nebraska gave fifth-grade students (that’s 4th Class kids to us) in a flyer meant to teach them how to act if they’re being bullied – which basically told them to put up and shut up.
Here’s just some of the awful advice the flyer touted, which is so bad it’s almost, almost humorous:
RULE #7: Do not tell on bullies. The number one reason bullies hate their victims is because the victims tell on them. Telling makes the bully want to retaliate. Tell an adult only when a real injury or crime (theft of something valuable) has occurred. Would we keep our friends if we tattled on them?
RULE #8: Don’t be a sore loser. No one likes a sore loser.
RULE #9: Learn to laugh at yourself and not get “hooked” by put-downs. Make a joke of it or agree with the put-down, for example:“If you think I’m ugly, you should see my sister!”
“If you think I look like a nerd, you should see my dad!”
The school later apologised for sending out such a blatantly harmful message – calling the information in the flyer “inaccurate” but saying it was sent with “good intentions”.
This was all a joke, right? Right? We despair.
