Like most Irish expats, Barry Keoghan is now obsessed with rebel songs

Alexa, play ‘The Wolf Tones’.

AS JANUARY CONTINUES to feel like a space in time with no beginning or end, it’s a relief to be able to come home to a Late Late Show line-up that’s actually decent.

We had Saoirse Ronan talking about horses, we had Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly giving an improvised musical performance – not to mention to the panel of Ireland’s biggest and brightest young stars.

Journalist Ellen Coyne, boxer Michael Conlan, influencer Rosie Connolly and actor Barry Keoghan spoke to Ryan Tubridy about the issues most affecting young people in 2018, and how to combat the cries of “snowflakes!” from those who misinterpret them.

That said, Keoghan didn’t have a breeze as to what the word ‘snowflake’ actually meant, but was relieved when Tubridy told him that he wasn’t one, TG.

“Is there a code to it or something?” he said. “I’ve no idea what it means. I’ve never heard of it.

If someone called me a snowflake, I’d be like, ‘are you serious?’”

The BAFTA Rising Star nominee, who heard the news while eating cornflakes in his boxers (standard), later contributed to a conversation on “the Irish abroad”; the gravity of the choice to move, and the impact it can have on a person.

Conlan shared his experience of living abroad in Los Angeles, admitting he’d rarely listened to Irish traditional music before moving.

“When I came back, I was a full force rebel,” he said. “I know nearly every single Irish song now, every single Wolf Tones song … It’s the music I listen to when I’m warming up.”

Keoghan concurred: “I’d have the Irish rebels playing constantly, never listened to them before.

When I went abroad, I just this notion of ‘aw, just play the album’. When you’re away, you become more attached to your country, and you appreciate it more. You find the Irish pockets, wherever you are.”
