Haven’t caught the Christmas spirit yet? Watch these 9 clips

“SAAANTAAA!!”

THE BUILD-UP TO Christmas seems to start earlier every year (tree decorations in Brown Thomas in August, anyone?) but with just days to go, some people just still aren’t feeling the festive spirit.

So, in a not-quite-last-minute effort to address this, we’ve put together a shortlist of the most memorable moments in Christmas films. And if you don’t see your own favourite festive moment from film in the list below, let us know in the comments.

1. Elf

Just in case you hadn’t heard, SANTA’S COMING!

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas

In this clip, king of Halloweentown Jack Skellington discovers Christmastown and tries to figure out what all the fuss (and lack of horror) is about in Danny Elfman’s ‘What’s This?’ song:

3. Meet Me In St Louis

Judy Garland’s classic ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ is certainly one of the more melancholy Christmas songs out there, but it still manages to convey that Yuletide optimism of looking forward to better times:

4. It’s a Wonderful Life

And sticking with heart-rending tear-jerkers for another moment, here’s the closing scene of Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life, when Clarence gets his wings and  (Jimmy Stewart) realises the value of, well, everything:

5. Santa Clause

This one is for all the children of the 70s and 80s: remember when an elfen Dudley Moore tackled an evil toy manufacturing John Lithgow to save Christmas? Then you will definitely enjoy this magical tour of Santa’s workshop (and reindeer stables):

6. The Muppet Christmas Carol

The opening of the this rendition of Charles Dickens’ tale of one man’s Christmas crisis introduces Michael Caine in possibly the most convincing Scrooge performance of all time. (Even the vegetables don’t like him…)

7. Home Alone

“He’s only a kid Harry. We can take him.” Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McAllister successfully managed to not only prevent two men from breaking into the family home (ahem, when the rest of the family forgot him and went on holidays…), he also managed to completely destroy their dignity in a series of scenes like this:

8. E.T.

And if you’re looking for a quality family film, then you won’t do much better than Steven Spielberg’s E.T., which is bound to be on at least one channel at a convenient time over the Christmas period. Here the film’s three main stars discuss the prospects of interstellar telecommunications:

9. The Snowman

A Christmas classic since the early ’80s (and at one stage a big part of An Post’s Christmas stamps campaign), The Snowman is best remembered – and loved – for its Walking in the Air sequence in which a fleet of flying snowmen take a young boy on a magical voyage through snowy skies:
