THE INTERNET IS a sucker for romantic tales – and this is up there in the pantheon of unlikely viral relationships.
A local book shop in Washington DC was going about its business last week when they spotted a couple of customers in their shop and shared their story on Facebook:
“Harold and Miriam, both in their nineties, met for a blind first date at the bookstore on Sunday”
Would you look.
The bookshop added:
We’re not crying. We just have something in our eye. :’)
The combination of their age and the fact that they were on a blind date captured Facebook’s imagination – and the pair went viral. Nearly 3000 likes and over 500 shares later – they’ve been making headlines around the world.
The Washington Post has held them up as a shining light
According to the story, Miriam hasn’t been on a date since her husband died:
Steiner hasn’t been on a date since her husband died in 1999. The couple had been married for 54 years. Since his death, Steiner says: “I never wanted to date. I never thought to date.” As for love: “I’m 93. I’m not looking for the love of my life. I had him. He’s gone.”
The pair of them had a nice time, by all accounts, but both agreed they’re not looking for anything more than a few dates:
“Reading is my companion,” she says. She takes a book with her pretty much everywhere. Also, she says, she has lots of friends and family (two daughters, two grandchildren) and in the summer swims every day. “I’m very happy with my life as it is. … I’m on my own. I do my own thing.”
What a pair <3
