BLINDBOY BOATCLUB OF Rubberbandits and podcast fame was The Tommy Tiernan Show last night. Tommy had no idea Blindboy would be joining him, such is the premise of the show.
When he came out, Tommy said that he had been “blown away” by his intelligence in the last few weeks.
You’ve a lot to be giving out about.”
In response, Blindboy called himself a “f*cking clown” but that he was “doing his best”. That’s some very relatable content there.
He explained that he portrays himself the way he does because people are sick of hearing things from “people in suits”, and says messages – particularly surrounding mental health – must be delivered in a new way.
Hence, the plastic bag.
I found myself looking at my Facebook and Twitter one day, and seeing that something like 70% of men under 30 follow us [Rubberbandits] online.
I was going, ‘alright, ok, how can I bring the stuff I learned when I was training to be a psychotherapist to those people, but do it in a medium that isn’t intimidating? Do it with a bag on my head.
The bag allows me to express things that a human doesn’t.”
He did also admit that he likes the privacy of the bag.
I just want to go to Aldi and buy toilet roll and not have people talk to me about Horse Outside.”
*endless applause emojis*
He also has a pretty decent conspiracy theory as to why mental health education isn’t currently part of the school curriculum in Ireland.
We can’t be advertised to if we are completely mentally healthy.
If you think of a bar soap, when was the last time you saw an ad for a bar of soap and they’re actually telling you how clean it’ll get you? What they’ll do is they’ll show you photographs of beautiful people. So when you buy this soap, they’re trying to sell you a better version of yourself. That only works on a population that’s not emotionally aware.”
… Hands up if you need to sit down after that?
