THE BLUE CAFE is a little restaurant and coffee joint just off Upper Main Street in the town of Arklow, County Wicklow.
Late last year, a Starbucks opened in the town, while Costa is all set to open a second store locally too – with all three locations being away from Main Street.
So The Blue Cafe just stuck up a rather excellent thank you message for their customers, with a bit of a sly dig thrown in to their more corporate rivals
Featuring a quality pun and a reference to Starbucks’ famous policy of name-writing, The Blue Cafe’s sign read:
Thank you for supporting a small local cafe. Our coffee doesn’t Costa lot and we don’t write your name on your cup as we think you already know it. xxx
Nice.
Inspired by a previous blackboard sign written by the Idaho Cafe in Cork, Liz Meehan – owner of the Blue Cafe – told DailyEdge.ie why she wrote her own version:
The purpose of the message was to remind people to support small, independent, local businesses in their areas. The money spent in businesses like The Blue Cafe stays in the town.
She continued:
I’m always glad to see new employment come to Arklow. I just wanted to remind people that small businesses are the back bone of this country.
And the best way to remind them? A thank you sign that knows how to make a joke but still deliver a serious message.
Well played.
