IRISH EMIGRANTS IN Canada, we’ve covered the snacks you have over there that we’re supremely jealous of.
Now, it’s time for the real food envy:
1. Montreal smoked meat sandwich
The ultimate tender meat, packed inside bread with some Montreal mustard on there for good measure. Sandwiches rarely hit such heights.
Ireland could so with such sumptuous quality.
2. Canadian style bacon
The peameal bacon is so much different to our own. They complement each other, and shouldn’t be seen as bacon competition.
3. Street meat
Every Canadian city has its street meat vendors, serving up all sorts of tasty meat in some bread. Nothing fancy, but wonderful nonetheless.
4. Poutine
The classic Canadian hangover/drunk cuisine. The campaign to get it to Ireland has already begun.
5. Butter tarts
It’s ranked as one of Canada’s quintessential desserts. Described here as being “made with melted butter, brown sugar, egg, walnuts, and white vinegar.”
6. Any and all maple syrup-based products
It’s not just for pancakes. Oh no.
7. Montreal-style bagel
To get the name Montreal attached to it, the bagels have to be boiled in honey-sweetened water before baking. It’s worth the effort.
8. Bannock
The Canadian version of a scone. Yes please.
9. Salmon jerky
Think of it as an equivalent to our Bacon Fries (except not as addictive).
10. And finally… the humble Kraft Dinner
Canadians are obsessed with this cheesy quick snack. It’s a source of national pride.
It’s not practical for you to bring these back fully formed, but some of the ingredients might be nice. Your mam could make it work with an Irish twist, surely.
