Casual sex is actually good for you, provided you're into it
A RECENTLY PUBLISHED study has found that casual sex can sometimes have considerably positive effects.
Researchers from New York University and Cornell University published the study earlier this month. The results dispel the misconceptions that people mainly feel guilt or low self-worth after casual encounters in the bedroom with someone they’re not going out with.
In the study, New York University students kept a diary documenting their sexual encounters for 12 weeks. In it, they wrote how they felt after each casual rendezvous, and the results were surprising.
Researchers found that “When it came to those who were sociosexually unrestricted, having casual sex was associated with higher self-esteem and life satisfaction and lower depression and anxiety.”
Students selected for the study admitted leaning toward sociosexual, meaning they would be more into sex outside a relationship. They reported a higher well-being after casual sex, whereas those who were a bit more inhibited showed no difference.
While past studies have dwelled on the undesirable effects, the aftermath only depends on the person engaging in it, and it can sometimes enhance their lives. There were also no notable gender differences, so men and woman enjoy casual sex just as much as each other. Surprise surprise.
