EVEN WHEN YOU have done the same job for over thirty years and pretty much perfected your craft, there’s always going to be someone who’s still eager to criticise you.
Broadcasters are no strangers to rage-filled tirades of incoherent abuse from listeners at home. Cathal Mac Coille is probably happy to be getting a break from the last sixteen years of that on Morning Ireland now that he’s heading off on retirement.
However, as a nice little joke, his colleagues at RTÉ sent him away with one little reminder ‘not to lose the run of’ himself.
They framed one of the final angry comments that he received from a listener as a parting gift.
The email was sent at 8:50am on the 19th of July this year and it reads:
Cathal Mac Coille, as one of the most experienced broadcasters on Irish radio(supposedly),you (sic) should do your job and not be a mouthpiece for the establishment.
You are a defender of the corruption that plagues this country. You are a disgrace to your profession, a disgrace to your country and most of all a disgrace to yourself.
But I suppose you have your snout in the trough as well and it tastes too good tell the truth and do some real journalism .
Thank You
You’ve got to hand it to them for the polite conclusion to the email.
One man replied to Cathal’s tweet sharing the photograph with the remark “There’s always one!”, to which Cathal responded “Haha. Many more than one.”
Very, very true.
