Ireland's answer to Taylor Swift just released her first album, and Elton John is a huge fan

Meet Down’s newest musical export.

CATHERINE MCGRATH IS a name you can expect to be hearing a lot more of in the near future.

The 21 year-old singer, hailing from Co Down, releases her debut album ‘Talk Of This Town’ today.

And sure didn’t she only go and support Michale Bublé a wet week again when he played London’s Hyde Park? Fair play to her.

Not to mention the fact that she’s also bezzies with Elton John (kind of).

She told RTÉ Entertainment:

I went into my label – Warner Bros Records – and Phil Christy (President of Warner Bros.) said, ‘I’ve got something really exciting to show you. I’m going to play you this clip’.
He played this voice clip and it was Elton John talking about me! I thought that he had the wrong Catherine McGrath and that it was a mix up. Then he played my song on his Beats 1 show. It was crazy. I couldn’t understand how he’d heard of me. It was insane.
He said he couldn’t believe that this was my first album and he just loved all of the songs. He was just so nice.”

Not a bad endorsement to get.

McGrath is regularly compared to Taylor Swift, due to her songwriting style – think pop-country, not ‘Wagon Wheel’. She doesn’t mind the comparisons though?

What makes us so similar is that we sing about real experiences and things that we’ve been through and that’s what country music is all about to me.”
Second of all, she’s one of the most successful artists of all time. I couldn’t think of a better compliment to have.”

In fact, she’s already been out to Nashville to write with Liz Rose, a previous collaborator of Swift’s.

Ok, what’s the album like?

It’s good, even if you’re not a member of the Nathan Carter fan club. An example – Wild is about a time she went to a Coldplay concert with a lad she fancied, and he spent the entire gig texting another gal. Rude, TBH.

She told The Times:

He seemed to like me, but all he could talk about was his ex. I wrote a song about it and afterwards I thought, ‘What have I done? He’s going to hear this sooner or later, and it’s obvious it’s about him. We haven’t even admitted that we like each other and now here I am, spilling it all out in a song.’ So three months later I sent it to him and told him not to be freaked out by it.
As it turned out, lines such as ‘I knew you wanted her when you looked in my eyes, and you almost kissed me, and I almost believed the lie’ did freak him out a bit. I didn’t hear from him for two months. Finally he said, ‘That was a bit harsh.’ ”

Serves him right, sis.
