Open thread: Happy 30th birthday CD player... what was your first CD?

Here at TheJournal.ie towers we’ve turned up gems from Dustin the Turkey, Boyzone and Tupac. What was your first CD purchase?

ON THIS DAY 30 years ago the first commercially available CD player, the Sony CDP – 101 was released in Japan.

It got us thinking about what our first CDs were, whether they were bought for us or paid for with our own hard-earned cash.

Here are the musical confessions from us here at TheJournal.ie towers to get you going:

One of the first I can remember buying is ‘Willenium’ by Will Smith, including the songs ‘Wild Wild West’ and ‘So Fresh’.
First CD was Pulp’s ‘Different Class’. But, full disclosure: first tape was Celine Dion’s ‘The Colour of my Love’.

(We had to include the bit about the tape. We just had to)

The first I ever received was Dustin’s ‘Unplucked’. The first I ever bought with my own money was ‘The Marshall Mathers LP’ by Eminem.
Alanis Morissette: Jagged Little Pill. Solid.
Pretty sure it was Boyzone’s ‘Love Me for a Reason’… bought for me. And the first album was Ricky Martin’s ‘Livin’ la Vida Loca’. No joke.
‘All Eyez on Me’, by Tupac Shakur. Rest in piece homie, etc. *pours out some Coca-Cola on the carpet*
The Fun Lovin’ Criminal single by … The Fun Lovin’ Criminals.
I bought two CDs together (coz that’s how I roll). For the purpose of this question, I paid for Oasis ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory’ before I paid for the second CD, the name of which I conveniently forget.

(Another Celine Dion fan maybe?)

Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ – not contemporary to when I bought it on CD obviously, but I had it on tape for years.
Mine was The Corrs. It was a gift. I was not impressed. I think the first CD I bought myself was possibly ‘The Best of Del Amitri’.
I think it was REM ‘Out of Time’.
TLC. Scooter also featured prominently in my early CD collection.
‘Best of INXS’ after Hutchence died. Top man.
Guns and Roses – Double CD – Use Your Illusion I and II. Epic.

Time for you all to ‘fess up. What were the first CDs that were bought for you or you bought for yourself? Tell us in the comments section below.
