7 things you'll know if you love nothing more than a rummage in a charity shop
THE OLD SAYING ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ doesn’t resonate with everyone.
And as result of this, charity shops definitely aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.
While some people love nothing more than mooching around second-hand stores for the afternoon, it’s easily another person’s idea of a musky hell.
If you, however, see the merit in a little thrift shopping, then you’ll know all too well the quirks of the activity.
And here are just 7 of them.
1. You can make an assessment pretty swiftly.
You’re like a ninja when it comes to charity shopping.
It takes little more than 30 seconds for you to establish whether you’re in it for the long haul or about to do a cursory lap of the store out of sheer politeness.
2. You know to shop unisex.
While the stores are generally divided into men’s, women’s and children’s sections, an experienced charity-shopper will know that those rules don’t always apply.
You can’t always assume the other section isn’t concealing a little treasure, and that’s what sets you apart in the charity-shopper stakes.
3. You know to keep books in mind.
You rarely buy books new anymore because experience has taught you that you’ll likely find it in a nearby charity shop.
And if it’s a recent release or a bestseller, then chances are it’ll be in mint condition for a fraction of the cost.
4. You know how to ‘sell’ charity-shopping to your less-convinced friends.
There’s little more satisfying than reminding a mate that the French Connection coat they often admire was a charity-shop find.
And that’s why you do it so often. Even when they no longer need reminding.
5. You get a kick out of giving back to charity.
While bagging a bargain might be your main motivator when it comes to charity shopping, you can’t ignore the feeling you get when you know you’ve donated a little something to a good cause.
6. You have black-listed and A-listed certain stores.
More often than not, this decision has come down to the luck you had on the bargain front on previous trips.
And while you know the stock changes on a regular basis and there’s very likely a treasure to be found in one of your black-listed stores, it’s hard to shake off the feeling of a few unsuccessful rooting-sessions.
7. You know to always keep festivals in mind.
Charity shops are an absolute heaven for regular festival-goers.
And because you’re well aware of this, you never find yourself stuck for clobber the weekend before one of the biggest festivals of the year.
