Cheryl told Piers Morgan she thought the statement on her split with Liam was 'cringeworthy'

‘I hate those kinds of statements too.’

EARLIER THIS MONTH, Liam Payne and Cheryl called it a day on their relationship.

Considering the rumours which had surrounded the couple in the months leading up to the split, some of us were hoping for a drop or two of scalding hot tea in the days that followed the announcement.

It wasn’t to be, however, and the couple, who share a son together, didn’t deviate from the identical statements they released on their respective social media platforms.

We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It’s been a tough decision for us to make. We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.

Apparently, Piers Morgan wasn’t impressed by the lack of information either, and in an article he wrote for The Daily Mail this weekend, the Good Morning Britain host recalls delivering the news to viewers.

It’s always weird when celebrity couples split up saying they have so much love for each other. If they love each other that much, why are they splitting up? They should be more honest and just say, “We hate each other”.

So far, so Piers, but it turns out Cheryl had tuned in, and was bemused by Piers’ irritation.

When we came off air, Cheryl texted me: ‘I’m so sorry you didn’t like my statement, Piers – perhaps I should have texted you the intimate details in chronological order as it unfolded’.

Piers admitted he felt vaguely guilty over his on-air remarks, and told Cheryl as much in a reply, but it turns out the former Girls Aloud singer was on the same page as most of us when it came to the statements.

I’m just messing. I hate those kinds of statements too, so cringeworthy. But we don’t hate each other. It just didn’t work out. You going to Simon’s party?’

It just ‘didn’t work out’; fair enough.
