Everything you need to know about Dermot Kennedy, the Irish dude playing Coachella

Reppin’ the Dubs in the desert.

EVERYONE’S ANNUAL EYE examination outside of Specsavers happened this week when the Coachella lineup was announced.

Lovely. A grand day out, by the looks of things.

Anyway, beyond the big names of Arian Grande, Childish Gambino and Tame Impala (Kanye pulled out at the last minute, staying true to form), there are some Irish gems in the mix.

If you already have the calculator out trying to work out your annual leave and savings to go to the thing, might I recommend checking out Dermot Kennedy while you’re there?

Dermot’s had a pretty stunning three years or so. Having began his musical career busking on the streets of Dublin selling eight track CDs for a fiver, he’s since play multiple shows at the Olympia Theatre and Vicar Street respectively.

No doubt, these live dates were buoyed by the fact that he counts none other than Taylor Swift as a fan. In the run up to her fifth album, ‘Reputation’, the singer added DK to a Spotify playlist of her favourite songs.

‘Boston’ was the song in question. A tune, if I may say so myself.

Music was less of a vocation for DK, and more a case of gentle encouragement from his mam. Having only put one course down on the CAO – a classical music degree – he secured his place and began collaborating with his classmates.

His craft honed, a chance encounter with Glen Hansard at the annual Christmas Eve busk on Grafton Street in 2015 led to him being brought on stage with the man himself to perform.

His debut album is coming later this year, but for now, you check out this compilation of his “best bits” that Dermot put together on Spotify:

No doubt this Coachella performance will be the icing on the cake for him.
