Colour footage of Venice from 1912
THE FIRST FEMALE gondolier, Giorgia Boscolo, has taken to the canals of Venice this month after nine centuries of the profession being dominated by men.
But this film shows a Venice of a very different time, almost one century ago. The footage was shot just a few years before the country’s disastrous foray into World War I.
Kinemacolor, developed in the late 19th century, was the first successfully used colour motion picture process.
