ON SATURDAY JULY 14, Conor McGregor will turn 30-years-old.
And in order to mark the milestone, a Lithuanian artist, who goes by the name Aspencrow, has spent much of the year sculpting a life-size statue of the UFC champion.
The statue, which depicts the Dubliner emerging from a block of stone, comes in three versions – two of which will be displayed in London galleries and one which will be gifted to the man himself.
Commenting on the design, which is worth almost €50,000 and entitled ATLAS, Aspencrow told the Evening Standard he combined inspiration from both the past and the present in order to create the piece.
To create the piece, I looked back to antiquity, when athletes were immortalised in sculptures as gods. I combined some details from a Michelangelo statue with modern day graffiti to capture the present day’s warrior sensibilities.
Aspencrow, who has been documenting the sculpture’s meticulous creation on his Instagram page over the course of the last five months, will have the statue unveiled in London’s JD Malat Gallery this weekend.
Aspencrow’s creation has been dubbed a ‘heroic homage’ to the MMA fighter by the aforementioned gallery.
The sculpture will be open to the public from July 14 until September 30.
