COSTCO, THE SECOND largest retailer in the United States, has announced that it will be sound this year and not open on Thanksgiving, allowing employees to spend the day with their loved ones.
A spokesman for Costco told the website Think Progress:
Our employees work especially hard during the holiday season and we simply believe that they deserve the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with their families. Nothing more complicated than that.
While working on a day such as Thanksgiving might seem sacrilegious, it has increasingly become the norm in recent years with many stores now opening on the holiday in order to kick off their Black Friday sales a day early.
Stores like Walmart, Macy’s, Best Buy and Toys-R-Us have all confirmed that they will open on Thanksgiving Day this year, with many others expected to follow suit.
(How Americans can even contemplate going shopping after enjoying a big Thanksgiving feed is beyond us, but hey.)
