Here's what you need to know about Dancing Queen, your next docu-series binge watch

It’s Dance Moms meets RuPaul’s Drag Race meets fabulous.

YOU MIGHT KNOW who Alyssa Edwards is, but do you know Justin Johnson?

Drag queen Alyssa came to slay on season five of RuPaul’s Drag Race (season two of All Stars), and now she’s back – this time front and centre – for her own docu-series, ‘Dancing Queen’.

Right, what’s it about though?

Dancing Queen follows Alyssa Edwards in and out of drag as Justin Johnson, as he juggles drag with managing his dance studio Beyond Belief in Texas. He does this while also trying to maintain some kind of semblance of a personal life. It ain’t easy being a star, y’know!

Do I need to have watched Drag Race to get it?

Not at all (although some of the references and tongue-popping may go over you head). ‘Dancing Queen’ gives you a deeper insight into Alyssa’s life before, during and after the show.  It’s also worth noting that ‘Dancing Queen’ is as much about the dancers that Alyssa trains than the queen herself – she’s actually been teaching dance longer than she’s been doing drag. In fact, most of her students and their parents didn’t know she did drag until the show aired. In ‘Dancing Queen’, you’ll see that life come full circle. Alyssa told Bustle: ”I think the greatest gift I’ve ever received is the gift of being a teacher. And I definitely think I was born with that gift because it takes a very special someone. I mean, I am not only shaping these children, the youth of the future, of tomorrow, to be excellent dancers, but also, something bigger than that.

I am inspiring them to be good people. Good humans. And hopefully, assets to society. If you have a dream, hold tight, steadfast. And wake up and work hard and make it a reality.”

How many episodes are there?

There’s eight episodes in series one, and while there’s no talk of a second series yet, we’d imagine people will be wanting more from Alyssa shortly enough.

You’ll like it if you love …

Drag Race, So You Think You Can Dance, Dance Moms – anything on TLC, pretty much.

You’ll probably switch over if you hate …

Clichés and inspirational quotes. (Alyssa didn’t name her studio Beyond Belief for the craic).
