IT IS WITH a heavy heart that we must announce that the Brits are at it again. You’d think that with millions of their citizens coming from Irish ancestry and 10% of the population having at least one Irish grandparent, they might be able to acknowledge a small detail like a fada on a letter of our names. Apparently not.
This morning Dara Ó Briain received a letter from Theresa May regarding the UK general election. It appears that one of her plans for Brexit is to re-anglicize any of those notiony Irish names that include a fada.
As you can see on Dara’s letter, the conservative party have taken the liberty to change a ‘Ó’ to the word ‘and’. Dara’s new Brexit name is ‘Dara and Briain’. He wasn’t the only one.

Perhaps this is the UK getting payback by taking his fada away and replacing it with the word ‘and’ to make him sound less Irish and more like a gay couple.
