David Cameron under fire for refusing to wear 'feminist' t-shirt

Elle magazine asked him five times.

ELLE MAGAZINE ASKED British Prime Minister David Cameron to wear a t-shirt which reads ‘this is what a feminist looks like’ five times, and five times he refused.

The magazine wanted Cameron to take part for its inaugural feminism issue, but declined, and now Elle is asking:

david

Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg are among those taking part in the Elle campaign, which involves being photographed wearing the The Fawcett Society’s slogan t-shirt.

Editor Lorraine Candy writes:

This is a shame on so many levels, especially given he knew Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband had agreed without hesitation, alongside many other influential men who were more than happy to call themselves feminists. It seems the Prime Minister still has an issue with the word “feminist”.

Cameron has spoken about feminism before. In 2013 he was asked by Red Magazine if he was a feminist and he said that while he believes men and women should be treated equally, he’s not into labels.

Qualifying his comments to Channel 4 news he said that if the word means equal rights for women then yes, he is a feminist.

Elle reports that Cameron provided a quote in lieu of agreeing to wear the t-shirt, but notes that nowhere in the quote does the word ‘feminism’ appear.
