Declassified FBI files tell of UFO sightings in Utah and New Mexico

Recently declassified memos show that agents had exchanged information about UFOs being spotted in Utah and New Mexico in the late 1940s.

RECENTLY DECLASSIFIED FBI files have thrown up memos that indicate US police and army officers had reported seeing a UFOs flying and crashing near Salt Lake City in Utah – and that alien bodies were also recovered.

The 1947 memo marked ‘urgent’ and sent to the bureau director Edgar Hoover said that an army guard, a policeman and a highway patrol officer – who had been miles apart from one another – reported seeing an explosion over mountains near Logan, north of Salt Lake City.

The file, entitled Flying Discs, said that “several residents [reported] seeing what appeared to be two aerial explosions, followed by falling object.” It added that residents had reported the objects “circling the city at a high rate of speed”.

Another memo written by agent Guy Hottel in 1950, indicated that the aliens had landed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. The incident at Roswell is one of the most famous UFO sightings in the world and the topic has been surrounded by conspiracy theories for decades.

The identity of the informant was censored in Hottel’s memo, dated 22 March 1950, however the person had told investigators that aliens had landed in New Mexico “due to the fact that the government has a very high-powered radar set-up in that area and it is believed the radar interferes with the controlling mechanism of the saucers”, reports the Daily Mail.

The report stated that ”three so-called flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico” by an investigator for the Air Forces:

(The UFOs) were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter. Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall.
The bodies were dressed in a metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed flyers and test pilots.

Hottel signed off by saying that the matter was not being investigated further.

Declassified files are now able to be accessed by the public through the FBI’s new online resource The Vault.
