Warning: Spoilers for the finale within
WHEN A TV show captures the imagination of the nation like Derry Girls has, it’s not long before the viewing public take more than a passing interest in the people behind the characters.
And that’s exactly what happened in the days that followed the show’s debut on January 4 this year.
Erin, Michelle, Clare, Orla and James were no longer enough for us, and we wanted more, damn it.
As a result we soon learned that the actress playing Clare was almost twice the character’s age, you know, in real life – a discovery that left Twitter pretty shook.
Nicola Coughlan, who plays the ever-anxious Clare, thought the scenes on Twitter were a right laugh after word landed she was, in fact, 31, not 16.
Speaking to Morning Ireland following the season finale last night, the Galway native laughed off the fascination.
And yes: I am older than Clare! I’m surprised people are so interested in it to be honest! But sure, all well and good.
The actress, whose character came out in an exceptionally emotional episode of the show last night, says her looks may well bring in the dollaz in the future.
I said to my agent, ‘Sure, we’ll get a skincare deal out of it at some stage! We’ll be grand!’
Sure, she’s laughing.
