DEVENEY’S OF RATHMINES, one of Dublin’s most beloved off-licences, has shut up shop after 107 years.
Deveney’s announced the sad news on their Facebook last week and attributed the closure to having to “bend to socio-economic realities”.
With great sadness I am writing today to confirm that after 107 years, Deveney’s Rathmines is closed. What a journey we’ve had over the past century, starting life as a horse feed and supplies store when Rathmines was a staging post outside the main city of Dublin up to today where we have been battling the current as an independent off licence.
I am truly devastated that it has come to this as I will miss you all and am heartbroken that we have had to bend to socio-economic realities when I truly believe that local businesses provide the fabric and glue in our fragile society, something we need now as much as ever.
The news has come as a blow to many locals in Dublin 6 with many taking to Facebook to share lovely tributes and thank the dearly departed off-licence for supplying fuel for many a great night.
Over the years, Deveney’s had acquired a reputation for its stellar customer service. Back in March, we wrote about how it always went one step beyond…
Have been known to drop customers home if they buy too much to carry, and also deliver to thirsty students in nearby Trinity Hall. Sound lads basically.
It will be sorely missed.
