Here's why Donald Trump's 'Santa' question was such an agonising moment

Nice one, Don.

MOST OF US err on the side of caution when it comes to Santa Claus.

A quick rule of thumb we tend to adhere to is to assume that anyone of primary school age still believes in the man himself, and definitely doesn’t need us jumping in with our giant feet and ruining the illusion.

So, until we’re told otherwise, we’ll always ask what Santa is bringing because, well, it’s practically the law.

Not if you’re Donald Trump, however.

In footage which has been circulating endlessly since yesterday, the President of the United States can be seen having a phone conversation with a child, which has left many of us wondering – not for the first time – what goes on in his head.

Speaking to a seven-year-old named Coleman, President Trump asked:

Are you still a believer in Santa?

And there’s your first mistake.

Asking a kid if they still believe in Santa is a roundabout way of bursting that particular festive bubble.

If they do believe, you’ve planted serious doubt. And if they’re on the fence, you’ve definitely pushed them right over.

If, however, you luck out after that mammoth misfire, and they still happen to say they  believe, you may consider yourself saved, and you can backtrack like you’ve never backtracked before.

In fact, you should do your level-best to confirm that the man himself will, indeed, be whoosing down their chimney in the not-so-distant future.

But again, if you’re Trump, the same rules don’t apply.

After hearing that the kid in question did still believe in Santa, Trump bizarrely qualified his initial statement by saying:

Because at seven it’s marginal, right?

Nice one. Why don’t you just call an end to childhood then and there?
