The note was discovered in Fermanagh, but the lady who found it didn’t see it as a lesson in finders keepers.

The fiver is the work of Birmingham artist Graham Short, who produced four of the new five pounds engraved with a 5mm picture of Jane Austen.

They were put into circulation in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The Northern Irish note made its way to Charlie’s Bar in Enniskillen. An elderly woman from Donegal was its most recent owner.

When she discovered the value, she passed the note on to be given to charity.

Speaking to the BBC, Short said:

I went into a small bar called Charlie’s Bar and actually that is where I spent it, in there.
An elderly lady found it. She said ‘I don’t want my picture in the papers’ but she said if it sells for a lot of money it would be better if young children could benefit from it.

The note was then returned to the Tony Huggins-Haig gallery in Scotland, who started the project

The lady, known as J, wrote:

It was lovely to speak to you today. £5 note enclosed, I don’t need it at my time of life. Please use it to help young people.

The gallery wrote that the note would be auctioned off to raise money for Children In Need.

The £5 note spent in Northern Ireland has been discovered, and donated back to the gallery to use for Children in Need, helping make a better life for young persons across the country.
The lady who found the note has surprised us all by sending it to the gallery and asking that it be used to help young people.

Now, three of the notes have been found. One was found in a Christmas card, and the other was given as change in a south Wales cafe. That means there’s one on the loose…
