Drive-in bingo brings the right numbers to Waterford car park
YOU’VE HEARD OF drive-in movies and drive-through fast food outlets, but you’ve probably never heard of drive-in bingo. Until now, that is.
Leading the way in the world of bingo innovation is the Carers Association of Waterford, which held its first drive-in bingo event this week.
Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Dermot Sullivan, an administrative care support worker, gave us the skinny on the recent coming together of man and machine and, eh, bingo card. Their mission statement was simple:
After a couple of false starts, the perfect location was found – Butlerstown retail park.
With local businesses providing prizes including BBQs, rugs and doorstops, and with a lorry provided for free from which to make announcements, the (temporary) stage was set.
In spite of each patron having their own personal roof to operate under, the sun shone regardless. “We were blessed with the weather,” Dermot says, “even though all the patrons stayed with their cars.”
And cars there were, with over 125 descending on the car park.
Ticket sales – along with the money made from a pop-up shop that sold sweets and drinks – helped raise over €3,000 on the night, which will go towards the €15,000 the Association needs annually to stay open.
With honking horns and flashing lights used to signal mini-windfalls, the night was a roaring success, and the Carers Association plan to hold it again soon.
