A Love Letter To Dublin's Northside
AH, THE NORTHSIDE.
How do we love thee? Let us count the ways.
We salute it for all the Penneys it has
Once you cross The Liffey, you’re greeted with not one, but two ginormous Penneys. Try as it might, Grafton Street jut can’t compete.
It’s home to some of the most gorgeous cinemas in Dublin
Like the effortlessly cool Light House Cinema in Smithfield and the gloriously old-school Savoy Cinema on O’Connell Street.
The Southside might have the Aviva Stadium, but can it really compete with the majesty of Croke Park on a summer’s day?
After all, what other pitch has borne witness to so much drama, excitement, elation and devastation?
The ultimate field of dreams.
And where else has played host to Beyoncé and Bruce Springsteen in the one summer? Exactly.
It’s the site of the most iconic Irish birth ever
And the graffiti is *chef’s kiss*
Do you know where the world’s greatest supermarket is? Clue: it ain’t the Southside
We are, of course, talking about Swords’ very own JC Savages, which is unparalleled when it comes to serious bargains and gas advertising.
It’s got Moore Street, the most colourful street in our fair city
SIX ORANGES FOR A EURO!
The beaches are absolute stunners
Velvet Strand, Dollymount, Skerries — the list goes on and on and on.

The Queen of Ireland resides there…
Bow down, bitches.
Meanwhile, some of the most important figures in Irish history call Glasnevin home
Michael Collins, Eamon de Valera, Charles Stewart Parnell, Daniel O’Connell, James Larkin, Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington — all fans of Dublin’s Northside.
Speaking of Glasnevin… one could argue that the National Botanic Gardens is one of the loveliest, most peaceful spots in Dublin
*exhales deeply*
That’s more like it.
How many people are alive today because their parents met under this clock?
Who said the Northside wasn’t romantic?
Everyone knows that the Northside accent beats the Southside accent any day of the week
“Ah heyor leave ih ouh” > “For fock’s sake”
It’s inspired great works of art
Case in point? This classic by Don Conroy.
And, of course, this iconic quote from The Commitments:
But most of all, it’s home to O’Connell Street, the heart and soul of Dublin
A street that’s borne witness to everything from historic marches to Italia ’90 celebrations to drunken meals in McDonald’s.
Simply the best.
