DUBLIN ZOO HAS a brand new arrival.
They announced yesterday that a “male scimitar-horned oryx” was the latest arrival to the zoo – and it’s very good news indeed:
The scimitar-horned oryx was once widespread across northern Africa but due to overhunting, habitat loss and competition with domestic livestock, they have gradually disappeared from the wild.
The species have now been classified as extinct in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as there has been no definitive evidence of their presence in the wild for more than 15 years.
It’s this photo that’s gone viral on their Facebook page
“Story?”
With nearly 3000 likes since yesterday afternoon, the little oryx is a star.
It brings the total number of oryx in Dublin Zoo to four – with over over 200 of them existing in “semi-wild” conditions around the world.
No name yet, but just the photos are enough for now <3
Welcome young lad.
