Dumbledore’s Army Ireland is the new Instagram repeal account you should follow

Facts disarm myths – Expelliarmus!

WITH THE REFERENDUM to remove the 8th Amendment less than 8 weeks away, the campaigns on both sides are heating up.

And that’s exactly what one Instagram account is hoping to help you with.

Introducing you to @Dumbledores_Army_Ireland.

Aoife Cusack is their Luna Lovegood for this slick gif!

Their graphics are great and their captions witty and playful, but don’t let that fool you that this account is smoke and mirrors. The magic of this account is real:  it lies in the richness of their digestible facts, explained in a comprehensive but lucid manner that feels very conversational.

You really could imagine using these as your template when talking to your Granny in the kitchen.

Their bio says that this branch of Dumbledore’s Army is an:

Educational guerrilla movement providing information & tools for Ireland’s referendum to #repealthe8th amendment of the constitution #StupefyThe8th

Lovin’ that hashtag! #StupefyThe8th

The Instagram page acknowledges that it can be difficult to remember all the facts, especially if you aren’t reading about or dealing with the referendum on a daily basis.

But, like Harry and his fellow DA members, you should try to be prepared in the next 8 weeks: you don’t know when an offhand conversation could happen with a random colleague or friend who’s sitting on the fence and is bewildered by the kaleidoscope of information.

So if the referendum result is something you really care about, this page can help prepare you to be comfortable in discussing the facts and truths surrounding the referendum.

Dumbledore’s Army’s message is that ‘patronuses, not horcruxes’ will win the Referendum.

Briony Somers, founder of @Dumbledores_army_Ireland, says that the concept was sparked by her personal experience of being pro-choice but feeling she was not proficient in persuading others to vote for repeal:
So I had been in a few situations talking to people who were uncertain and I felt really ill-equipped to answer their questions.
A lot of my friends work in law and politics and for them this information was second hand but I found it hard to find information that was communicated in a way that was digestible for someone not involved with the issue on a daily basis
The idea was born when she saw parallels between the Hogwarts students who had to take matters into their own hands to educate themselves so they could stand up for what they believed was right.
Somers felt that an army of volunteers armed with practical information, based in fact, that was succinct and not condescending was needed in the campaign to help persuade those stuck on the fence.
I kept thinking of Dumbledore’s Army in Harry Potter and how they decided to educate themselves because they knew they had to learn in a practical way that they could take into the outside world and the analogy just kept growing.

This is certainly an account to keep in your arsenal. Remember: Facts disarm myths – Expelliarmus!
