IT’S THE END of an era as Eamon Dunphy today announced that after 40 years, he’s leaving RTÉ. It seems to have taken many people by surprise but Eamo’s reasons are pretty sound as he wants to concentrate on his podcast ‘The Stand’.
(1/2) Two years ago, I decided not to renew my contract with RTÉ Sport. At the time, they prevailed upon me to stay and, in fact, offered me a rise, a small one, to do so. However, before the World Cup I told them this time, I would be leaving.
(2/2) I intend to focus on my podcast The Stand which is flourishing and has had over 2.3 million listens since we started. That’s where my energy will now be devoted.
In my 40 years with RTÉ, I made many good friends and I wish them the very best for the future.
Eamon is probably one of the most divisive characters we’ve ever had in Irish society so it’s easy to see why people are conflicted on his departure. Nevertheless, it was always going to draw a reaction from the Irish public.
Some were reminiscing of their best times with the man himself.
Funniest night out with Eamon Dunphy was one that ended with us barging our way into Tom Jones's company and then having a sing-song with him. TJ trying to do harmonies and ED going 'shut up, I'm singing!'
