ED SHEERAN HAS hinted that there may be another Croke Park date – but he’s assured us that there won’t be a repeat of last year’s Garth Brooks fiasco.
The singer is due to play the stadium on July 24.
Speaking to Ian Dempsey on Today FM this morning, Sheeran was quite cagey on whether there would be another date added or not:
Um… I dunno. I think, I’ll see how the first one sells and then maybe we can discuss it.
However, he’s aware of the rules – and The Script have already taken one of the three gigs allowed in the stadium a year.
He’s confident that any extra gigs won’t cause another Garthgate-level headache:
I don’t think there’s a problem, I think you’re allowed three gigs a year at Croke Park. All I’ll say is, [concerts] bring in – not only the excitement of the people going to the concerts – it brings in a lot of money for local hotels and restaurants.
Music concerts make people happy, and cancelling music concerts make them sad. It’s a good thing for Dublin to have 80,000 people a night going to one venue and enjoying a gig.
He said he first decided to do a massive gig in Dublin after seeing the reaction to his intimate VH1 Storytellers gig in Whelan’s last month, but he hasn’t yet been to Croke Park.
“I’ve never been inside. I’ve only seen a game of Gaelic football on the TV when I’m in my gran’s, but it looks amazing,” he said.
Tickets for the July 24 gig go on sale this Thursday at 9am. May the odds be ever in your favour.
