Egyptian man names daughter 'Facebook'
A man has called his baby girl ‘Facebook’ to honour the social networking site that was used to spread word about the country’s revolutionary demonstrations.
AN EGYPTIAN MAN has named his newborn daughter Facebook in honour of the role that the social networking site played in the country’s revolution.
Gamal Ibrahim, who is in his 20s, bestowed the name on his baby “to express his joy at the achievements made by the January 25 youth,” reports Al-Ahram.
The website was used by protesters and organisers to spread the word about demonstrations – which ultimately led to the ousting of the country’s leader of 30 years, Hosni Mubarak, CNN reports.
Facebook has a huge following in Egypt, with bout 5 million people in the country having an active account. The site saw a surge of new groups being created as the uprising gathered pace – with more than 32,000 different groups and 14,000 new pages materialising on the service in the last two weeks of January, reports PCmag.com
