Elephant destroys house before returning to save baby trapped under debris
A REMORSEFUL ELEPHANT smashed a house to pieces in an Indian village, before turning back to save a baby trapped by its destruction.
Speaking to the Times of India, couple Dipak and Lalita Mahato claim that a rampaging elephant destroyed their home in West Bengal, but showed some humanity when it saved their child.
Dipak explained that he and his wife were eating around 8pm when they heard “cracking and crashing” sounds coming from bedroom.
But when their 10-month old baby started wailing, the sorry elephant returned and used its trunk to clear all debris from the little girl. She sustained minor injuries but is stable and being kept under observation in a local hospital.
Her mother Lalita explained the incident as a “miracle”.
Jhalda ranger Samir Bose told the Times that the roaming elephant has damaged at least 17 houses in Mathadi, Kasidih and Ghoshra village areas but has since returned to a nearby forest.
