This journalist's response to a photo of Emma Watson is why the world needs feminism
EMMA WATSON IS everywhere at the moment on account of the imminent release of Beauty and the Beast.
To coincide with the film’s release, the actress is featured on the cover of this month’s issue of Vanity Fair. In an interview with the magazine, she discussed everything from her need for privacy to her work as a feminist activist. (Watson is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and helped launch the #HeForShe campaign in 2014.)
Rather annoyingly, some commentators have seized upon this photo of the actress to undermine her feminist credentials.
British journalist Julia Hartley-Brewer pointed to the photo as a reason why feminists of Emma Watson’s ilk aren’t taken seriously and called her “hypocritical”.
Because apparently you can’t be in possession of breasts and agitate for gender equality. The two are mutually exclusive, you see.
She also attempted to liken the photo to something from a Page 3 shoot.
As if that weren’t enough to leave a bad taste in your mouth, Julia Hartley-Brewer and Giles Coren engaged in a bit of back-and-forth about Watson’s “tits” with Coren calling them “small and flat”.
God give us strength.

Watson has spoken before about being sexualised by “certain elements of the press” from the age of 14.
More than a decade later and it seems that little has changed. Instead of acknowledging Watson’s work with the United Nations, the pair opted to critique her boobs and mock her activism.
Because God forbid a young woman stands up for what she believes in, right?
Whoops!
