6 invaluable pieces of life advice from action movies
WE CAN ALL learn a thing or two from our favourite action heroes.
Alright, perhaps we don’t need to know how to fire a gun in our everyday lives. And, yes, maybe we don’t all need to be skilled in the art of hand-to-hand combat.
But, trust us, there are definitely some things that our favourite brawny pals can teach us about life.
1. Shoes really do make the man
You can tell a lot about someone from what shoes they’re wearing – and bad shoes are a real deal-breaker. But for John McClane in Die Hard on the other hand? He’s barefoot the entire film. And what does that say about the whole fashion issue? Yes, that fancy shoes are for the weak. Think about that next time you slip on your Crocs, eh?

2. Change is good
A lot of people fear change – but not Rocky Balboa. After defeating Ivan Drago, he gives an impassioned speech on the positive power of change. OK, so maybe your life change might be something a little more like taking up tennis again rather than solving the Cold War conflict, but it’s a start.
3. Relaxation is key
We all know how important hard work is. And no one knows the value of elbow grease better than an action movie hero, after all. But what about letting off some steam? Commando reminds us that sometimes, in order to climb the mountain, you’ve got to allow yourself to take some breaks along the way.
And while we’re on the subject of Arnie’s quips…
4. Puns are the highest form of wit
If you’re going to seal the deal, do it with a smile. And there’s no better way to raise a smile than with wordplay, right? Alright, alright, some of Arnie’s one-liners are a touch nonsensical (“See you at the party, Richter!” from Total Recall springs to mind, for one) but often they are utter genius. Sprinkle some puns into your conversation and watch your hordes of admirers swell.
5. You’re only as good as your wingman
Friends are the cornerstone of any happy, successful life. What good is victory if you have no one to share its sweetness with? The hero always gets the girl, naturally – but Tom Cruise in Top Gun gets something more important than that. He gets friendship.

6. Take the leap
Life is equally about planning ahead and sheer, blind luck. No one knows the benefits of taking a chance and playing it by ear better than Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon. Playing by the rules is no fun – think outside the box. Unorthodox methods often pay dividends. (Plus, look at that hair. Incredible.)
One piece of advice we’re sure John McClane would give you is: “Take the Expressway bus, pal.” It’s got WiFi, reclining seats, 25 great inter-city routes and an attitude that Arnie would envy. It’s like the car, only better.
For more information on what Expressway has to offer, check out the video below – directed by Irishman John Moore, who brought us Behind Enemy Lines, Max Payne and A Good Day To Die Hard.
