Fancy some Beninese voodoo funk?
FANCY SOMETHING different for the weekend? The Festival of World Cultures opens tomorrow in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, and runs through the weekend.
It’s celebrating its 10th anniversary with a packed schedule of Irish and international acts. Over 800 artists from 33 countries will appear over the three days, featuring acts like former Sigur Rós string section Amiina, and Beninese voodoo funk act Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou.
While some of the tickets for the gigs have sold out, the festival is also running many free events. A street carnival to celebrate the festival’s birthday will spill over Dún Laoghaire on Sunday from 4.45 til 5.50pm.
The festival is also launching its first internet radio station, Radio Hemisphere, which begins broadcasting at midday tomorrow. The station will broadcast highlights, interviews and special features from the festival.
