UKIP LEADER NIGEL Farage has put his backing behind a single released by former BBC radio DJ Mike Read.
The song, entitled UKIP Calypso and performed by Read’s group The Independents, received a tweet of support from Farage earlier today:
Read sings the song – which includes the lyrics “leaders committed a cardinal sin, open the borders let them all come in, illegal immigrants in every town, stand up and be counted Blair and Brown – in a faux Caribbean accent.
Read told Sky News that the song is satirical and not “remotely racist”. The tune is performed in the Afro-Caribbean calypso style and the former DJ said that if he had been singing an Australian song he would have performed it in an Australian accent.
Read is a longtime supporter of UKIP and has performed at party events in the past.
The Independent reports that bookmakers in the UK are taking bets on the song making it to the number one spot by the weekend.
