It's time to ban those 'girl leads boyfriend around on holiday by the hand' photos from Instagram

Make it stop.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, dancer and actress Julianne Hough shared a photograph from her honeymoon.

The photo shows Julianne Hough facing away from the camera while clutching her husband’s hand and leading her husband around an improbably nice beach. The accompanying hashtag reads “#followmebabe“.

These sorts of photos have become somewhat of an Instagram trope in recent years. “Carefree woman drags accommodating boyfriend around exotic location.”

A photographer named Murad Osmann originated the concept a few years ago when he started sharing photos of his wife leading him through their travels as part of a #followmeto series.

Like so.

The series went viral and the couple became known as the “famous hand-holding couple”.

Like anything that goes viral, the #followmeto series spawned countless copycat photos with couples from all over the world recreating the photos for Instagram. (It’s even inspired some amusing parodies.)

If you search the hashtag #followmeto, you’ll be greeted with dozens of such photos.

I don’t know what’s worse about these choreographed photos – the sight of a man limply holding his other half’s hand as she stands perfectly still while pretending to be his shepherd or whatever, or the thought of how long couples spend trying to get the perfect shot? Time that could be spent enjoying their fabulous holiday.

Which is why I’m appealing to people, celebrities and influencers to abandon this trope once and for all. It’s lame, it’s overdone and makes people on your timeline groan. It makes me pine for the days of the “hot dogs or legs” trend.

Once the brands have copied it, it’s time to find something new.

Plus it’s hardly the picture of a great holiday, is it?

The only people who should be dragged anywhere are (a) female friends in nightclubs who are relying on you to navigate your way through the heaving masses or (b) a toddler about to wet him/herself in a shopping centre.

Time to bring back the art of asking strangers to take a photo of you and your other half smiling and squinting into the sun.
