Why Foundations by Kate Nash is a truly iconic noughties song

You said I must eat so many lemons…

IF YOU’VE BEEN watching Glow, chances are you’ve noticed a familiar face in the ensemble.

The character of Rhonda is played by none other than singer Kate Nash.

“Kate Nash?” you say. “The woman behind Foundations, otherwise known as the greatest song of the noughties?”

You betcha.

Believe it or not, Foundations is 10 years old this year.

It was released in June 2007 and charted at number 2 in the UK after it was beaten to the top spot by Rihanna’s Umbrella.

Unlike other songs from 2007 – Hey There Delilah and Smack That, for instance – Foundations has stood the test of time and remains an iconic banger.

It perfectly sums up every rubbish relationship you’ve ever been in while also remaining a consummate bop.

On the one hand, it’s about a relationship so toxic that one party refuses to turn on the heating for the other out of sheer spite. On the other hand, OH MY GOD FOUNDATIONS IS ON LET’S DANCE.

You can’t possibly pick a favourite lyric because every line is whopper.

But you know that there’s nothing more fun than nailing the delivery of, “YOU SAID I MUST EAT SO MANY LEMONS BECAUSE I AM SO BITTA/I SAID I’D RATHER BE WITH YOUR FRIENDS, MATE, BECAUSE THEY ARE MUCH FITTA”

You get so angry on her behalf every time this lyric comes up.

WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE VOMITING ON KATE NASH’S NEW SHOES? COP YOURSELF ON.

Kate Nash: queen of withering putdowns.

There are few things more enjoyable than belting it out with a roomful of pals.

Such passion. Such emotion.

Fact: it’s scientifically impossible to sing Foundations without affecting a dodgy Cockney accent.

You know how it’s really difficult to pat your head and rub your belly at the same time? Singing Foundations in a normal voice requires even more concentration than that.

You have fond memories of that period where people knew how to play Foundations on the piano.

Good party trick, to be fair.

You get personally offended when people claim the song is by Lily Allen.

How very dare you? Apologise immediately.

In short, you will defend Foundations to the death.

A musical masterpiece and a classic work of feminine aggro.

Let’s listen to it, shall we?
