SAOIRSE RONAN DIDN’T take home the Screen Actor’s Guild Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture last night.
It’s not a good sign for her Oscar chances. Saoirse, of course, won a Golden Globe for Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.
However, the woman who is seen as her biggest competitor, Frances McDormand, wasn’t in her category. She took the Globe for Best Actress in a Drama, so this is a massive one-up on her Oscar chances.
Further more, dark horse Margot Robbie beat Saoirse in the comedy category at the Critic’s Choice Awards earlier this month, and is strongly tipped to get an Oscar nomination herself. Frances beat them both to win Best Actress at the same ceremony.
But back to last night, for a minute.
The gong went to McDormand for her fantastic performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
But something was off. Did she even want it?
During the nominations, she hid from camera
Of course, this could just be Frances McDormand doing typical Frances McDormand things.
That’s until you listen to her extremely classy and subtle acceptance
After graciously accepting her Actor, Frances appeared to plead with voters to leave a ‘doorstop’ for younger actors.
This is really great and I thank you, I come out of the woods every few years and you invite me to the party. But there’s a lot of young ones coming up, and they need doorstops too, let’s think about that. Bye.
Of course, people immediately assumed she was talking about Saoirse Ronan, and even her co-star Timothee Chamalet, who has been looked over for his role in Call Me By Your Name
No, it’s not just you
It’s all clear now
Here’s the full speech:
