GALLERY: Dublin Zoo welcomes a new baby giraffe
DUBLIN ZOO has released the first photographs of its latest arrival – a baby giraffe born just three weeks ago.
The calf, born on June 27th, made her first appearance at the African Savanna a mere three days after being born but had not yet been photographed.
Despite being only three weeks old, the creature is already larger than most humans – standing some six feet tall.
The new arrival means Dublin Zoo is now home to ten giraffes, including six pure Rothschild giraffes.
The baby girl is the second to be born to its mother Maeve, with an elder sister Arria being born two years ago.
Helen Clarke-Bennet, the team leader at Dublin Zoo’s African Plains, said the new arrival was a “beautiful, strong and healthy calf” – and remarked that it was unusual for a new calf to join its herd until at least a week after it was born.

The latest arrival has yet to be named, and as always, the Zoo is seeking public suggestions.
“We like names that are original, based on the animal’s country of origin and tell us something about the newborn,” Clarke-Bennet said.
Ideas can be submitted through Dublin Zoo’s Facebook page.
