'Weed? I'd legalise immediately': Anonymous Garda invites people to 'ask me anything'

Find out what this Garda thinks of travellers, shutting down house parties, and what sauce is best at the chipper…

FROM WHAT BRAND of tea he or she prefers, to feelings on being called ‘lazy’ to thoughts on carrying guns, one Garda has broken the code of conduct of An Garda Síochána by communicating with a media entity about life in the force.

The unnamed Garda has invited users of the website Reddit to ‘ask me anything’, as part of the site’s popular AMA series.

All we know is that this officer works in the southern region of  the country and that he/she is in their forties. They’ve been writing under the username Magnum_ip.

The Garda advised that he or she couldn’t answer questions about current investigations or intelligence gathering, but it seems that pretty much anything else was fair game. A photo of the Garda’s ID badge (with any incriminating details blacked out) was also posted as ‘proof’:

The Garda said that their view of travellers was ‘skewed’ because they only came in contact with members of the travelling community when they are breaking the law. The Gardai also mentioned that some of these incidents had been “violent and terrifying”.

If you’ve ever wondered whether or nor a Garda can shut down a house party, the answer is no. Magnum_ip said:

We have no power to shut down a house party. I would ask politely for the noise to be turned down and explain why. Of course you could tell me to f**k off and I would have to.

Asked about delays in dealing with a serious assault Magnum_ip said that “the nature of the job sometimes means the victim gets forgotten until court” and advised the Reddit user to contact the Gardaí in question.

And what about legalising cannabis? The Garda said that he/she would:

legalise immediately, regulate quality, tax proceeds, f**k up organised crime, end recession.

Now, down to the nitty-gritty:

Barry’s Tea or Lyon’s tea?

Barry’s

Garlic mayo or curry sauce?

And finally the Garda thought that this tax disc from Keep Going Sure it’s Grand was ‘brilliant’ and said that he/she wanted ‘Have ye drink taken’ written on their tombstone.
