Did Gemma Chan throw some shade at Scarlett Johansson for taking on a transgender role?

Hmmmmm.

EARLIER THIS YEAR, Scarlett Johansson was criticised for taking a role playing a transgender man in the upcoming Rupert Sanders flick Rub & Tug.

Fans took issue that her character Dante “Tex” Gill identified as a transgender man, not a cisgender woman like Johansson.

When asked for comment on the reaction to her new film, Johansson’s rep provided this comment on Rub & Tug to Bustle from the actor herself:

Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.”

The actor was referencing the fact that they are all cisgender actors who have previously portrayed transgender characters.

Johansson eventually stood down from the role, telling Out Magazine: “In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project.

Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive. I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues.”

The initial casting decision led to a number of memes at Johansson’s expense.

Ah, the internet – such an unforgiving place.

Anyway, it appears Humans actor Gemma Chan has joined in on the fun-poking.

Scarlett Johansson. Just kidding.”

Tea is served!

Johnasson was previously criticised for taking a role cast by Sanders when she starred in 2017′s Ghost in the Shell. Her character was originally portrayed as being Asian in the manga series, with many fans calling the move an attempt at “whitewashing”.

So, that might also have something to do with her dig.
