Is the new Ghostbusters any cop? Here's what the reviews are saying

I AIN’T AFRAID OF NO GHOSTS.

AH, LADY GHOSTBUSTERS.

Since the remake was announced back in January 2015, it has split opinion with many fans warmly embracing the idea of an all-female summer comedy blockbusters and others (read: men) maintaining that the female presence would ruin (a) the integrity of the Ghostbusters franchise and (b) their childhoods.

And now, after months of arguing on the internet about it, the reviews are in!

So, what’s the word?

It seems to be quite good!

Sure, it might not be in contention for Oscars next year, but as far as summer blockbusters go, it ticks a lot of the boxes.

Empire awarded the film three stars out of five and called it “fun, funny and full of energy”.

Still, the film works for the most part, and even though the laughs notably dry up as the CGI spectacular kicks into gear, its feelgood vibes will most likely have already won you over. The online haters didn’t have unparalleled insight about a film they hadn’t seen, then. Who’d have thought it?

The Guardian was slightly more generous, giving the film four our of five and calling it “terrifically inventive”.

Rejoice! The new Ghostbusters is good. Very good, in fact.
Fun oozes from almost every frame; likewise the energy of a team excited to be revolutionising the blockbuster landscape

The New York Times, meanwhile, said it was “that rarest of big-studio offerings — a movie that is a lot of enjoyable, disposable fun”. They also commended the cast’s “real comedy chemistry” and “emotionally fleshed-out performances”.

As for the bad reviews? The Hollywood Reporter called it “a bust” and Vanity Fair described it as “quick and dull and weightless”. Oh well, you can’t win ‘em all.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a rating of 76%.

Decent.

Here’s a flavour of some of the reaction over on Twitter…

Despite the generally positive reaction, there is a section of the internet that is still adamant that it must be bad

The journalists who are writing the good reviews are surely being bribed!

THIS IS NO JOKE, GUYS.

But worry not, because Reddit is on it.

As for the charges that it’s ruining people’s childhoods? This little gal begs to differ…
