GIRLS ROCK CAMP is finally coming to Ireland.
GRD is a non-profit group that runs camps aimed at “empowering girls and women to discover their musical and artistic potential”.
The camps take place worldwide, but the first Dublin one will run June 27-July 1st. Applications are now open to attend, and it sounds like the best craic ever.
You’ll learn to sing, or play an instrument (guitar, drums, bass, keyboard), and previous musical experience is not needed.
There will be workshops on topics such as stage set-up, women in music history, and performance – all carried out by an all-female team.
We asked the camp’s organisers to tell us their favourite female singers or bands from the past, and present
Karen:
Stevie Nicks
As a singer I think her voice is unparalleled in its raw power, richness, control, emotion and rockness! As a songwriter her lyrics are poetic and painfully honest. As an icon she is totally unique and completely true to herself.
Erykah Badu
She’s my current pick even though she has been in the industry for 20 year she is still completely relevant today. She has even coined a term for her most recent music which combines trap music with her original style of R&B. She’s always evolved with new technologies and new genres of music. She has many names she’s a DJ, a singer, a producer, a songwriter, an activist, mother of three and even a doula!
Laura:
Joni Mitchell
She took artistic control of every aspect of her career, including her production and art work.
Christine and the Queens
Really cool debut album and the dancing really adds something to the music in a Robyn-esque kind of way.
Niamh:
Kate Tempest
She’s a poet, a playwright, a novelist and a rapper. Her medium is words, she tackles topics of our time with heart and skill.
Cate Le Bon
She has a unique sound, quirky guitars, loopy childish melodies, Welsh accent – pop mood, she exudes the bravery to be herself.
Rossella:
Ani DiFranco
Punk at heart folksinger, wonderful guitar player, producer and owner of her record label Righteous Babe Records (that she started when she was 19!), Ani’s been rocking out since 1990. Although she released her strongest albums in the 90s, her message is still very actual and her activism alive and kicking. An inspiring queer, feminist icon and authentic advocate of DIY.
tUnE-yArDs
Her music is a beautiful outburst of energy, a refreshing and daring exploration of vocals and sounds.
