Much attention had been focused on who would win the most awards: Netflix or HBO. It ended in a tie for the streaming giant and the cable television network, with both winning 23 awards.
But the real focus for many was on who wore what.
New mamas Chrissy Teigen and Kirsten Dunst, who both gave birth in early May, were positively glowing.

The model/presenter shimmered in a sparkly Zuhair Murad gúna and the actress/producer wore a deep v-neck midnight blue gown.
Actress Tracee Ellis Ross turned up the volume in a striking pink Valentino Haute Couture gown.

The poofy shape and jewel-tone colour may look familiar to you as in May Frances McDormand and Anne Hathaway wore eye-catching pieces from the same designer to the Met Gala.

Jessica Biel was nominated for best lead actress in a limited series/movie for her work on The Sinner and arrived in a strapless number by Ralph & Russo.

Jessica’s white dress at first glance looked whimsical and delicate, but the scalloped features and interesting structure of the bottom of the dress added an extra dimension.
Ralph & Russo – the designers Meghan Markle’s dress for her official engagment photographs - are creating some of the most interesting feminine silhouettes around at the moment and they were behind Sandra Oh’s figure-hugging and plunging frock.

Sandra became the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for outstanding actress in a drama for her role in AMC’s Killing Eve.
The shiny satin material of Sandra’s dress continued to be popular with Glow actress Alison Brie and Game of Thrones’ star Gwendoline Christie both choosing dresses made of a similar material in shades of citrine.

British actress and breastfeeding activist Thandie Newton was nominated for and won Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Maeve Millay on Westworld.

Oh! and her acceptance speech was – how do you say – pretty effing epic.

Fellow British actress Claire Foy also took home an Emmy, winning Best Actress for her stellar performance as Queen Elizabeth II in the Crown.

Although, perhaps we should take a leaf out of British media news outlets when they say that successful Irish artists and sportspeople are ‘British’, like Saoirse Ronan or Gary and Paul O’Donovan.
Claire and Thandie are now our own ‘homegrown Irish talent’.

U.S actress Rachel Brosnahan won her first Emmy for her portrayal of Midge Maisel, a role for which she won a Golden Globe in January.

The star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was previously nominated for an Emmy for her role of Rachel Posner on House of Cards. In her acceptance speech, Rachel made an impassioned plea to American voters to turn out at the midterm elections in November, saying that:
Sarah Paulson channelled her inner Black Swan in an ebony black tulle dress, as did Sarah Silverman.

However, a special shout out goes to what Sarah Silverman wore on her feet.

Following Claire Foy and Jessica Biel, white continued to be a popular colour, with Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, and Kristen Bell opting for all-white on the night.

Loathe to hold a 14-year-old up for attention because of her appearance but Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things looked like the most adorable cupcake in a very age-appropriate dress by Calvin Klein.

Finally, a special shout out to the cast of Queer Eye for absolutely upping the game for what men can wear to an Awards Ceremony.
