ON MONDAY THE 2nd of July, Glass Animals drummer Joe Seaward was cycling along Dublin’s south quays when he was hit by a truck on Usher’s Quay.
The accident occurred in the afternoon and resulted in injuries which were serious, but not life-threatening. Ten days later, the band released a statement detailing the injuries Joe sustained. The drummer’s leg was broken on impact, he suffered a complex skull fracture and had to undergo neurosurgery several times.
The neurosurgery consisted of reshaping part of his skull that had collapsed and been compressed into the brain by the weight of the truck’s trailer. The operation was successful, but the collapsed skull had bruised and damaged the area of the brain responsible for speech. Initially Joe was only able to get out one word… ‘I’… But each day, he is finding more.
Soon after, Joe allowed his bandmate Dave to release a statement on his behalf.
Joe wanted me to let everyone know he’s doing good and said to stick up these photos.
He is recovering very well. Able to talk better and better each day. He has been blown away by the support and kindness that everyone has shown, and is incredibly grateful. Thank you all for being there for my boy. You have healing powers.
Today, the band shared a photograph of Joe walking on crutches.
Our little chicken is standing! Slightly wonky… but not for long. Speech is coming back fast now too.
They thanked the physiotherapists, doctors and nurses who have assisted Joe in his recovery, and their fans for the kind messages.
