6 unexpected things that happened this week
CLEOPATRA ONCE SAID that all strange and terrible events are welcome, but comforts we despise.
Strange events are certainly welcome around these parts. Every Saturday morning, as you slip and slide into the weekend, DailyEdge.ie delivers the strangest of the week’s news. Just for you.
We hope they comfort you.
A man in a gorilla suit was shot with a tranq dart when he was confused with an actual gorilla. The man was wearing the suit as part of an animal escape drill at the Loro Parque Zoo in Tenerife. However, not everyone was in the loop. A vet who had not been informed of the drill spotted him and shot him with a dart intended for a 400-pound gorilla. He was taken to hospital in serious condition, but has since recovered. The bananas helped. (Syracuse)
Selfie surgery is on the rise. According to a report in South Florida (where else?) young people are being driven by surgery by their incessant photographing of themselves, which brings their flaws to their attention. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery noted that one in three surgeons report seeing more patients with complaints about their looks in social media snapshots. Kids today! We definitely weren’t so ugly back in the day, right? (NBC 6, South Florida)
A man has used a lifelike “sex doll” to help sell his car. An enterprising eBayer brought in a, er, lovely assistant to shift his 1990 VW Golf. Angus Dean, from Sussex in England, borrowed his friend’s doll (called Sandy) and photographed her in various positions in the hatchback to increase interest. A “FRIEND’S DOLL”. A likely story. Miss Tibet only had one contestant. Tenzin Yangzom won the pageant unopposed and will be crowned Miss Tibet on the 8th of June. “We received eight applications for this year’s pageant. Five confirmed, but four withdrew at the last minute citing various personal problems,” the organiser said. Perhaps Tenzin scared them off. But, of course, they ALL have lovely bottoms. (Times of India)
A couple have been arrested over the weight of their 11-year-old son. In an unprecedented move, citing child cruelty, the boy was taken from his parents. The family live in Norfolk and had allowed their son’s weight to reach 15 stone. They claim his weight gain is “genetic”. (Daily Mail)
George RR Martin has offered to kill a Game of Thrones fan. WELL, technically. Basically in order to raise money for two of his favourite charities, he will name a character after a $20,000 benefactor in A Song of Ice and Fire novel. Regardless of the character’s standing, Martin has guaranteed them a “grisly death”. Oh, because that makes a change, right? (Sydney Morning Herald)
