An article from 1958 advising women on how to get a husband is the talk of Instagram right now

Some, eh, practical advice here.

AT A TIME when victim blaming still occurs in court rooms and the gender pay gap is denied, it’s nice to look back, reflect on how far we’ve come, maybe have a little laugh.

In fact, it’s exactly what singer Caroline Kay did when she came across an article from the 1950s, entitled: “129 Ways To Get A Husband” from McCall’s magazine.

Fair, right? Some women want to get married. No shame in wanting to speed up the process, I guess.

Caroline is quick to point out that some of the points might not be relevant anymore, but she reckons a lot of them still are.

… One such as “buying a dog and walking it”.

After that though, things get a bit questionable.

The article recommends “have your car break down in strategic places”.

I’ve tried Googling ‘X strategic places for your car to break down in Ireland’ and was bereft to find no listicle had been written yet. Watch this space.

Recommendation number three? “Go to night school. Take courses that men like.”

Because what use is an education if men can’t appreciate your expertise, right?

Other advice includes reading the obituaries to keep an eye out for “eligible widowers” (excuse me while I frantically refresh RIP.ie), as well as being nice to people in case they have “an eligible brother or son”. Good and practical, really.

Listen, it’s easy to get bogged down about the work that still needs to be done in terms of gender equality. But it’s also good to take stock of how far we’ve come, and indulge in a good eye roll.
